Your Scotland, Your Voice

On St Andrew's Day the Scottish Government published its white paper on Scotland's constitutional future, Your Scotland, Your Voice.

Your Scotland, Your Voice is available on the Scottish Government website (and also available in summary pdf form).

No English politician has yet offered an opinion on either the substance of Your Scotland, Your Voice or its implications for England. Least said, soonest mended.

The editorial in Guardian yesterday was urging Gordon Brown to instigate a referendum on independence from Westminster in order to disrupt the SNP’s plans. I tend to think Wendy Alexander’s ‘bring it on’ moment was the last credible opportunity for the unionist parties to do that. Now they’ve just got to grit their teeth and counter the ‘referendum deniers’ charge.

On the Record

The purpose of giving powers to a Scottish or Welsh Assembly is so that the people of those countries shall determine for themselves what decisions should be taken in those defined and particular fields. Had the Government approached this in a proper constitutional manner they would have provided for an English Assembly at the same time, so that the people of England would have the right to decide these matters for themselves within their own context.
