Power2010 Deliberative Poll: Guide to Reforms

The Power2010 campaign, which many members of this site have taken part in, has unveiled their Guide to Reforms (pdf) for participants in the Deliberative Poll stage of the Power2010 consultation.

The three most popular reforms from the preceding public consultation stage are as follows:

  1. Hold a referendum on establishing an English Parliament suggested by 410 people
  2. Introduce a more proportional voting system for elections suggested by 280 people
  3. Hold a referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union suggested by 123 people

For updates please check out the Power2010 blog.

For certain if not the United Kingdom in total, then the voting public of England should make very effort to disengage themsleves from the present intended intergration of the EU. Personally however I would venture to say that no matter what the good intentions are of Power 2010 in proposing in their endeavour to give all people an opportunity to have their say in how the democracy in the UK should work for them, must appreciate that the power of the EU will never allow any changes to take place that may undermine their control of this Nation. In any event all three main political parties are committed to the EU. The EU's constitutional treaties replaced the British Constitution on 1st January 2009- whether we accept that or not, and these treaties will have the power to close Westminster Parliament, probably within a year of the next general election. Already the EU's Regionalisation Plans are afoot, in abolishing the nations 48 counties in favour of 9 Regional Councils, (abolishing also 19,000 or so councillors), that will all report directly to Brusells. So what is the point of discussing these Power 2010 options, they will sadly have no real influence on the final state of the present affairs. The politcal powers and the massive national and international wealth that run this country have too much to loose by allowing any redress of their present powers. Note that 27 nations with 27 different languages and 27 differing cultures, can really only be controlled by a form of dictatorship, and that is the way it is now heading in the UK.

On the Record

For the first time, some English people are realising that English and British is not synonymous. It is an important development. The English nationalism that we have heard about should be harnessed productively. The English have to get their act together and start to think how they want England to be run, whether it be by an English Parliament, by regional assemblies or by a mixture of both.
